David Owen
David’s experience as a chorister, soloist, choral conductor and teacher has provided him with a wealth of opportunities to perform music of all kinds throughout his life.
His mother once told him that he was singing before he could talk. His first piano lessons, were from a great aunt who, despite having been blind from birth, was a gifted musician, composer and teacher. His interest in Folk Music stems from his teens when he was bought his first guitar and began singing in local concerts and eisteddfodau in the Cynon Valley where he was raised.
In the late 1960s, as a student teacher at the Glamorgan College of Education in Barry, he became a member of a folk group, The Olive Branch, in which he played double bass and guitar. The group appeared several times on BBC Wales television in its programme Hob Y Deri Dando and made two EP records featuring both English and Welsh language songs for which he composed some of the music. This led to his forming another group, Y Traddodiad, with two Cynon Valley teachers who performed throughout Wales and regularly appeared on another BBC series, Disc a Dawn. This venture resulted in another Welsh Language record featuring tunes composed by David. After a long absence from the folk scene, due to work and other musical commitments, David has recently joined the Newport Folk Club where he enjoys performing songs in English and Welsh.
