AMAIRGIN THE GAEL: TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC IN NEWPORT, SOUTH WALES.
Amairgin the Gael is the only branch of Comhaltas in Wales. Comhaltas is an international organisation promoting traditional Irish music and dance around the world. They meet in St Julian’s Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday evenings during school term times, for beginners’ and improvers’ teaching (all ages), and also hold regular Irish Music Sessions in Newport on the first Friday of the month See their website for details. Members of the club take part in the annual Fleadh (Irish music competition, similar to the Welsh Eisteddfod, competing against other players of a similar age in the regional competition held in Rugby, regularly winning competitions and qualifying to compete in the All Britain competition. They also have members often winning competitions at the All
Britain competition, qualifying to compete in the All Ireland Fleadh (the world finals), held in Ireland each year, and have had several medal winners over the years.
